What does Judge Kelley's "choice" ruling mean?

By now, most everyone is aware that Baton Rouge Judge Tim Kelley has ruled in our favor, declaring Act 2 of the 2012 Legislative Session.

So what did the Judge rule, and how does the ruling affect Louisiana public schools?

Below is an announcement about a live webcast of the Board of Regents meeting this weekend to discuss the recommendations related to the UW personnel systems redesign (UW-Madison and UW-everything else. 

The Board of Regents meeting will be webcast this week from UW-Madison. Live audio and video streaming is scheduled at these times:

School funding meeting

 

November 27th there was a meeting at Aloha High school to discus school funding, it was well attended.  The message I took away from the meeting was that unless there are fundamental changes to Oregon tax structure school funding will not be stable or adequate and that Oregon voters won’t except that change unless they see that government is seriously working to curb spending and PERS cost are a big part of that.

Judge says state voucher scheme is unconstitutional

“Today’s ruling was a victory for the constitution and the rule of law,” said LFT President Steve Monaghan following the verdict. “It was also a victory for the nearly 700,000 children who depend on public schools for an education, and for local citizens who do not want their tax dollars diverted away from the uses they intended.”

Negotiations Update

We hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday and that you have recovered from the effects of “Sandy”.

We canceled the membership meeting that we had scheduled for November 20th, and thanks to the storm we had to postpone two negotiating sessions.  The good news is that we’re back on track now.  We returned to the bargaining table on November 9th and also conducted a session on November 28, 2012.

AFTNJ Superstorm Sandy Fund

A fund has been established in partnership with the AFT Disaster Relief Fund to assist AFTNJ members and retirees suffering losses from the storm and its aftermath.
